A better patio easier, faster at a lower cost.
Brock Base technologies have been replacing the stone base under world class athletic fields since 2004, with over 20 million square feet installed. Now, that renowned product engineering comes to the world of interlocking pavers. PaverBase™ is the new, better way to lay pavers in pedestrian areas. It speeds construction, makes the site easier to work in, and gives the homeowner the patio of their dreams in less time.
Brock Paverbase is an overlapping panel system made from Polyproplene, an environmental material known for it's durability, resilience, and thermal insulation qualities. Brock PaverBase replaces much of the traditional base used under pavers. It has been specially engineered for patios and walkways and other pedestrian applications. It is NOT engineered for driveways or other areas where vehicles are present.
It is especially convenient for backyard patios and paths, where access is often difficult. It's an engineered construction material designed to meet requirements such as ground stability and protection against frost heave, but at a fraction of the weight of traditional base. The function of Brock PaverBase™ is to minimize excavation, and use the panels as a "platform" on which to lay your pavers or patio stones. The overlapping panels install quickly and can be easily trimmed with a standard utility knife.
This is a picture of a pressure sensitive film that changes color at 7 psi or greater. The film was placed under the cross section of a single paver over Brock PaverBase. Then a 250 lb load was placed on the paver. The pink color shows the area where the load generated 7 PSI on the subgrade, and the white area shows where the load was less. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the ability of Brock PaverBase to spread loads over a subgrade.
There are two models of Brock PaverBase. PaverBase Pro is a larger panel engineered for larger projects typically done by a professional contractor, and carries a lifetime warranty for Brock PaverBase plus a warranty for the chosen pavers. Standard Brock PaverBase is distributed at your local Lowe's garden center. It's is a slightly thinner product, carries a lifetime warranty, but does not carry a warranty for the pavers chosen.
The idea is to minimize the amount of material you have to dig, then build a Brock "platform" on which you lay your pavers. The base underneath the Brock PaverBase needs to be compacted and properly leveled. Brock PaverBase panels will then spread load over that base to help ensure your patio stays level and smooth for years.

How deep you need to dig is determined by adding the thickness of the following components:
*will depend on the paver you select.

Patio surface should slope away from structure.
Using a hard rake and/or shovel, level the area and make sure it slopes away from any structures, such as the house. The 1-2" of Base material should be tightly compacted using a hand tamper or plate compactor. The slope should be about 1/4" per one foot of distance. It is helpful to pull a string line so you can check your slope. To run a string line, put two landscape stakes in the ground. Tie a piece of string to one of them, then pull it tight to the other. Use a level and ruler to create the desired slope. For example, the patio should slop 2.5" over a 10 foot distance (Diagram below). This will ensure that the patio moves water away from the house.

The area should be properly compacted. This can be done with a hand tamper or plate compactor. The area should be as smooth as possible, making sure to get rid of high and low spots to within +/- 1/4". This is now your compacted base. Congratulations, the hard part is over!

Add a geotextile fabric (weed barrier)

Level the sand using a board
Starting against a straight edge of the patio, lay the Brock panels, ensuring that the side flanges overlap. Ideally, lay them in a "brick-like" pattern (illustration below). This will ensure stability of the panels when you lay the pavers.

Trim any curves or along edges using a razor knife. Place any extra scrap pieces of Brock PaverBase in your recycling bin.
Now the fun really begins! Lay the pavers directly on the Brock PaverBase panels. You can slide the pavers into place. If you are tying to do a straight line, and the line gets crooked, hammer the row back in place using a rubber mallet.
Note: Polymeric joint sand will essentially harden like concrete between your pavers. It has several advantages: It is stable, so the sand won't end up on the top of your pavers; It allows you to power wash your patio without displacing the joint sand; It gives the patio a cleaner, more finished look.
Using a broom, spread sand over the patio and into the gaps between the pavers. Spread over small areas before moving onto the next one. Go back and forth over the gaps until no more sand will fit. Once you have swept the sand into the paver joints, a hand tamp should be used over the entire paver area in order to "vibrate" the sand further into the joints. This tamping procedure will insure that the maximum amount of sand is holding the pavers in place. (DO NOT USE A PLATE COMPACTER TO VIBRATE THE PAVERS!) Continue to add sand until the joints are full.

Make sure the surface of the pavers is clean
Once you are done spreading the polymeric sand into the gaps, use a leaf blower to blow the fine dust off the surface of your patio. (You want to make sure you sweep it off well first or you will generate a large dust cloud!) DO NOT WASH IT OFF WITH WATER!) THAT COMES LATER. If the patio is not free of polymeric sand on the surface of the pavers, you may see a film/haze on the pavers once you follow step 6b.
Once the surface of the patio is completely clean, follow the instructions for wetting on the packaging of the polymeric sand. This will entail lightly spraying the joint sand with water, which will activate the polymer that hardens the sand.

A: A 250 lb weight placed on a single paver over Brock PaverBase results in less than 7 psi on ground. Because it comes in panels, it is a great load spreader.
Q: What happens to the material over time? Does it degrade?
A: Polypropylene has a LONG life and is proven in many construction materials, such as pipes, geofabrics and rope. It is chosen because of its durability and its resistance to mold, bacteria, decay, cracking and in the case of pavers, compression.
Q: A stone base has insulating properties and protects the ground from freezing and heaving. How does Brock deal with this?
A: 20mm PaverBase provides the same thermal insulation properties of 9" stone. It has the same "R" value as EPS so it is essentially similar to the Polystyrene used to insulate houses, only much more durable to withstand a paver application.
Q: Does Brock PaverBase drain?
A: Brock Paver base, with a vertical permeability rate of over 100" per hour, and far exceeds the permeability rate of the pavers themselves. Brock PaverBase also drains both vertically and horizontally to move water quickly away from the area.
Q: How much do the panels weigh?
A: A bundle of Brock PaverBase panels that covers a 55 Square foot area weights 12 lbs. That is about 1/100th the weight of the stone required over the same area. You can put 600 square feet of base in the back of a pick-up truck, and one person can move it.
Q: How do I cut the material to fit?
A: Brock PaverBase can be cut with a razor knife for curves and edges, so no special tools are required.

How to build your patio
Watch our Pro Installation introductory video.
Easy to Install a patio with Brock PaverBase.Building your new patio with Brock PaverBase should be simple and enjoyable.
Where would you use Brock PaverBase?
- In difficult Access areas, such as on hills, where you have to pass through small gates, up and down steps, and in tight work spaces.
- In restricted construction zones, such as in areas where storing materials on street is prohibited, where traffic patterns are difficult, or where dump fees are high.
- Where speed of construction is critical.
- Brock PaverBase is engineered for Pedestrian applications, such as patios, paths and walkways.
Note: Expansive or unstable subgrade soil conditions may result in failure of the paver installation including undulations in the finished paver surface or cracking of pavers. Brock PaverBase will not resolve subgrade issues associated with expansive or unstable soils. Subgrade soil issues should be remediated prior to the installation using Brock PaverBase if these soil conditions exist.Brock PaverBase is intended for pedestrian applications and not for vehicular traffic of any kind.
Step 1 - Remove what is currently there.
Most commonly this is a grass area that will become your new patio.
How deep you need to dig is determined by adding the thickness of the following components:*will depend on the paver you select.
Step 2 - Level and compact the base

Patio surface should slope away from structure.

The area should be properly compacted. This can be done with a hand tamper or plate compactor. The area should be as smooth as possible, making sure to get rid of high and low spots to within +/- 1/4". This is now your compacted base. Congratulations, the hard part is over!Step 3 - Add a geotextile barrier fabric (weed barrier) and spread a thin layer of sand
Add a geotextile barrier fabric (weed barrier) on top of the compacted base. Then, spread an even layer of sand to a depth of 1/2" – 1" deep on top of the leveled and compacted base. Use the sand to get the surface as smooth as possible. Scree the sand using a straight board (see picture). The board will also help you keep the slope so watch your string line.
Add a geotextile fabric (weed barrier)

Level the sand using a board
Step 4 - Install the Brock PaverBase
Starting against a straight edge of the patio, lay the Brock panels, ensuring that the side flanges overlap. Ideally, lay them in a "brick-like" pattern (illustration below). This will ensure stability of the panels when you lay the pavers.
Trim any curves or along edges using a razor knife. Place any extra scrap pieces of Brock PaverBase in your recycling bin.Step 5 - Install your pavers
Now the fun really begins! Lay the pavers directly on the Brock PaverBase panels. You can slide the pavers into place. If you are tying to do a straight line, and the line gets crooked, hammer the row back in place using a rubber mallet.Step 6 - Spreading polymeric Joint Sand
Note: Polymeric joint sand will essentially harden like concrete between your pavers. It has several advantages: It is stable, so the sand won't end up on the top of your pavers; It allows you to power wash your patio without displacing the joint sand; It gives the patio a cleaner, more finished look.Using a broom, spread sand over the patio and into the gaps between the pavers. This tamping procedure will insure that the maximum amount of sand is holding the pavers in place. (DO NOT USE A PLATE COMPACTER TO VIBRATE THE PAVERS!) Continue to add sand until the joints are full.
Step 6a - Cleaning the patio

Make sure the surface of the pavers is clean
Step 6b - Watering the Polymeric Sand
Once the surface of the patio is completely clean, follow the instructions for wetting on the packaging of the polymeric sand. This will entail lightly spraying the joint sand with water, which will activate the polymer that hardens the sand.Where to buy

FAQ's
Brock PaverBase system characteristics when compared to traditional base construction:
Q: Can Brock PaverBase really spread the load over the subgrade so the patio will stay flat?A: A 250 lb weight placed on a single paver over Brock PaverBase results in less than 7 psi on ground.
